Sunday! Attendance: 71. We focused on success. It's meaning, its significance, how it is measured and determined, what impacts it has in our relationships, how people view us and how we view them. All under our epistle reading (Philippians 3:4-14) and sermon text (Matthew 20:20-28). We had one first time local guest who found us via our website.
Bible Studies this week:
Wednesday 6:30 PM Kolkman's "The Gospel in Genesis"
Thursday 9:30 AM Church "The Book of James"
Sunday 9:15 AM Church "The Gospel of St. Matthew"
Couple's Group meets on Monday, October 13. Read the article in the Newsletter for all the details and the book we'll be sharing together. We'll meet on the second Monday of the month at 6:30 at the church through next May, then likely take the summer "off."
Newsletters for October are "in the mail" if you didn't pick yours up on Sunday. Note that while the "news" part of that is fairly well covered in our weekly e-letter, the printed newsletter also contains at least one article and a Bible study not ever conveyed in the e-letter. You'll also find birthdays, a calendar for the month, a schedule of who is serving when, etc. for the whole month in that printed newsletter.
Lutheran Women's Missionary League meets this Thursday at 10:00 at church.

Last Sunday 9/28! We had one first-time local guest who found us via the yellow pages. We talked about faithfulness. What it means, how it applies to our lives, and especially how that lies at the heart of being a disciple ( a spouse!) of Jesus. Great worship, music and fellowship, too!
Bible Study!
Wednesday 6:30 PM Kolkman's The Gospel in Genesis" COME JOIN US!
Note that the Thursday study is not meeting this week...
Sunday 9:15 Church "The Gospel of St. Matthew" GREAT STUDY! HOPE YOU CAN PARTICIPATE!
Dinner and a Movie! We're back on schedule! It's FRIDAY, 6:00 PM, at the church. Dinner is provided (a bit of a cash donation would be appreciated) so no need to address that. The movie is "The Nutty Professor" (the orginal). Candy and popcorn accompany the film! It's free, fun and everyone is invited!
Thank you to all that participated in the work party on Saturday....
I'm a Grandpa! Jacqueline Elizabeth Champion was born to Kristine and Nick on Friday at 12:26 PM in San Diego. She entered the world at 7 pounds, 2 ounces and 19 inches long. She is the most beautiful grandchild to have been born (to date, anyway). Jackie, Kristine, Nick, Debbie and I are are great. If you want to see brag pictures, just ask my wife - she carries them around with her. God willing, she will be Baptized here on Sunday, November 2, at the 10:30 service. We would be honored if you'd be a part of that...
"Focus on the Family" Many of you are familiar with this Christian ministry through their radio ministry and the many books of Dr. James Dobson. The Vice President of Focus on the Family, Dr. Bill Maier, will be leading a seminar at Zion Lutheran School in Fallbrook (1405 East Fallbrook Street) on Wednesday, October 8 at 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM entitled, "Straight Talk for Parents." This is for parents only (there is no child care provided there). It's free. More information is available by emailing zionschool@zlcs.org

Sunday! Attendance: 81. We discussed the verse, "Upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it." We especially focused on the last part, noting how our enemy works and how we defeat such.
Oceanside Harbor Days! It's this weekend!!! Our booth needs YOU! The only time slot fully staffed is the 9:00-Noon one on Saturday - all the others need a person or two more to help out. If you can help - even for just an hour or two, that would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Our booth is on the river side of the harbor, south of the lighthouse (look for the lighthouse, head toward the beach - you'll find us). If you have volunteered, please let plenty of time for parking. Any questions? Contact Carole Woodward at 630.5043. Thank you!!!
Wednesday Bible Study! It begins this week!!! We meet at our home, 710 Fredricks Avenue, Oceanside, 92058 (mapquest or email me for directions). We begin at 6:30 sharp. THIS week, it will be a "potluck" (bring anything to share) but in the future, the Kolkman's provide the maindish and drinks, a volunteer for that week brings a salad and another some dessert (this need NOT be anything "special" - a bag of salad and some dressing from the store works fine for the salad, a container of ice cream or package of cookies works fine for dessert). Our study begins at 7:00 (you can just come for that, if you like). Bruce Woodward is our study leader. Our study for the next few weeks is "The Gospel in Genesis." Our time includes fellowship, support and prayer, too. We are usually finished by 8:00 or 8:15. Questions? Email me back... We hope to see YOU!

Cara Penkert Update. The Penkerts were very active members of our family in the 1980's and Cara was born here in Oceanside and baptized in our church. While they eventually moved to Idaho, we've kept in touch. She has a very advanced form of Cystic Fibrosis and for over a year, she's been on the waiting list for a heart/lung transplant. Our church family (with help from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans) raised some funds for that. I'm pleased to report that she had that transplant on Sunday afternoon, and all went extremely well. She will be in the hospital for about a month and then will have about 6 months of recovery. Your prayers for Cara (as well as her parents, Bob & Heidi) are appreciated.

Sunday! Attendance: 67 Offerings: We celebrated the RICHES of God and the surprising, "gospel twist" that it all makes US rich, too! We had no first time local quests.
Oceanside Harbor Days! This is a HUGE event, the largest event in Oceanside, and once again, we'll be there with a booth. It's coming the weekend of September 20-21. A member donated all the money to make this happen, but it's a VERY "labor intensive" event in that it requires about 40-50 volunteers. We are doing this in two hour shifts - some "manning" the information table, some working with the balloons, some doing games. WE NEED YOU! If you can help, PLEASE phone Carole Woodward at 630.5043 or check out the sign-up sheet next Sunday. Thank you!
A Fun Time was Had by All! Our thanks to all who put together the Shepherd of the Valley Day at the Beach on Saturday! It was fun! We enjoy the lunch, eats, fellowship, singing and some even went in the water (it was an especially beautiful day at the beach!).
Church Choir! Our church is blessed with a great choir that ministers at the 8:00 service and often at special services such as Lent, Thanksgiving, etc. It begins rehearsals on TUESDAY at 6:30 at the church. Teens and up are all invited to participate. More questions? Call Marydee Hinrichs at 745.2525.
Thank you! Our thanks to teen Brian Bell who has been volunteering several hours this summer at the church, cleaning up the property. It's appreciated!
Congrats! Julie Kraft, a long time member of SVLC, was joined in marriage last Friday in San Marcos (Pastor Al had the joy of leading the wedding ceremony). She and her beloved will be making their home in Las Vegas. A slightly belated congrats to Doug Lara who was joined in marriage last week in Phoenix! He and his bride are moving back east where he is stationed in the military. Doug is Wayne and Diane Finley's grandson.
Coming up!
Wednesday, September 10, the Wednesday Bible Study group begins again at the Kolkmans
Friday, October 3, our monthly "Dinner and a Movie" begins for the season
Monday, October 13, our Couple's Group begins our "Dinner/Study/Friendship" nights.

Did You Know? The pastor makes house calls; in fact, he loves to. Monday nights are set aside exclusively for this but other times are often available, too. He doesn't just "show up" or come uninvited but he welcomes invites. There need not be any "agenda" - just friendly visits are great, too.
Newsletter articles, lists, fliers, etc. for the September Newsletter are due on Sunday. Thanks!
